How to Become an Umpire
As with all sports, bowls requires match officials to assist players in upholding the Laws of the Sport and deciding the shots scored when required. But there is a lot more to officiating than just that.
Many of our WBUA members have been fortunate enough to reach the very highest pinnacles during their umpiring careers -stepping onto the green at the Commonwealth Games, World Championships, and major National and International events. Whether you aspire to embark on that elite journey, or simply want a deeper understanding of the Laws to support your own club’s competitions, we would love for you to join us at one of our friendly, interactive training seminars.
The Training Journey
The Welsh Bowls Umpires Association (WBUA) is dedicated to safeguarding the integrity of bowls in Wales. We oversee the training, qualification, and development of Level 1 and Level 2 Umpires, alongside our accredited Markers, ensuring all forms of the game are played safely, fairly, and within the official laws. Your starting point will be training as a Level 1 Umpire. This process typically involves:
- Attending a practical WBUA training seminar.
- Passing a final on-the-green assessment.
You will receive access to our official Umpires Handbook and comprehensive training materials to help you along the way. Your future development will be guided by real match experience, working assessments, and upgrade seminars as you progress through the ranks.
